Something was draining out of her, a vein had opened from the place in her that had kept things from falling apart. It pulled like gravity, taking the muscles in her face with it, dragging them down, pushing her shoulders forward. I didn’t know how she was still standing upright. This was a visible weight in her chest, this was an enlarged, tumorous heart, this was someone begging to be put out of their misery.
“Do the right thing,” she said over her shoulder as she pulled open the door and walked out of the room, leaving me with the hollowed out carcass of our relationship, an animal I seemed to have killed in my sleep.
