This was the summer of saying yes.
Well. As much as I could. This was also the summer of round 1 of a book submission, of a frantic rewrite of a portion of that book before round 2, of writing a spec pilot, of taking any and all freelance work offered so I could continue to live indoors and eat food. So anytime I said yes, I also had an eye on the prize.
Because while there were as many beach afternoons and live music shows and road trips and beer o’clocks as I could justify, the prize gets first right of refusal. You don’t need momentum for beer o’clock and the beach is always due west. But career momentum can be killed with too many yeses and I want the prize more than I want a tan.
Which doesn’t mean I should always say no, which is a thing I’m working on.
So this was the summer I threw myself into everything, like a contestant on one of those Japanese game shows wearing a velcro suit, hurling herself at a velcro wall.
I stuck. Eyes still on the prize but as much marrow sucked out of the summer as I could get.
